Pupo – In Foster in the UK
Sadly Pupo has come back to our Charity having only been in the U.K. for a couple of weeks.
Pupo’s former Adopters say the following about him: ‘Pupo is a very smart boy. At first, he seems quite straightforward, but over the past couple weeks he has demonstrated a quirky personality that is quickly endearing. He’s had a tough life and we think he spent around a year and a half as a stray, and then around 18 months in a pound. Since then, he has experienced two weeks of home life with us. Leaving Spain and coming into a home for, presumably, the first time, was quite a big shock to Pupo. There were a lot of new sights and sounds and it was all quite stressful. A few days, though, and he started to really settle into family life. He sleeps well through the night and we’ve not had any accidents for several days. Pupo loves going for walks. He is a strong boy, but he also learns very quickly, so we’ve made excellent progress on loose-lead walking. He is getting more used to loud noises, which do affect his concentration and, whilst he does show significant interest in other dogs whilst out, we have not yet introduced him to any on our walks.
In the home, Pupo is very relaxed and seems more than comfortable chilling. He likes the company of people, so will often lie wherever we’re congregated, whether in the lounge, garden or in the kitchen whilst we cook. He very much also enjoys his own space and is quite happy to be kept in his room for quiet time. Pupo is very affectionate and loves a good tummy rub, but he is not pushy with it. If it isn’t stroking time, he will assume his usual position of lying on his back… Pupo does bark at reflections in mirrors and windows, and at any new or unusual sounds he may not have heard before. Although a big dog, he can get nervous and he would need a little time to fit into a new environment. He is highly intelligent and sits on command. We’ve been working on Down and Get to Bed. With treats, he responds almost immediately. Although a large dog, Pupo is very gentle and this is demonstrated well when taking treats out of hand. We’ve found that he’s benefitted from a raised bowl at feeding time, otherwise he has to lie down to eat.
Whilst with us, Pupo has been living with two dog-savvy cats. Initially, if they ran, he would chase, but we are now at the stage where they can be nose-to-nose without issue. We would definitely recommend a slow and controlled introduction, however.
Pupo cannot live with young children, and we feel he would be better off with an adult-only household. We believe he might have had bad experiences with children before, and has growled at both our boys (11 & 13) – particularly when food was brought into the mix. Pupo is a beautiful dog who has a great personality and seems very easy-going. He would fit into any older household and would be a wonderful companion for anyone willing to continue training him, and lucky enough to have him. Just keep your shoes locked away!’
