Rudy – Looking for a New Home – Already in the UK

Sadly we have handsome boy Rudy coming back to us due to his family’s change of circumstances. He looks a lovely dog just over 2 1/2 years old. Below is what his adopters say about him:

He loves being around people. He’ll often follow us around the house when we’re busy with tasks – he loves investigating every drawer, the laundry basket, items we’re handling…the list goes on. He does not grab or bite these, he’s just super nosy and loves being involved!  He loves cuddling on the couch while we’re watching TV and often has to sit so that he touches both of us (or in the middle!). – His tail almost never stops wagging! He is such a happy little soul and you only have to look at him to get that tail going. – Despite loving the company of this family, he is perfectly happy being left alone for a few hours at a time. He just curls up on his favourite chair and sleeps. He also sleeps downstairs by himself at night. – Apart from some attention seeking chewing of furniture when we first got him (easily addressed), we’ve never had any issues of destructivity in the house, even when he is left alone. He will happily sleep quite late in the morning. Often during the winter when it’s dark and cold out he refuses to get out of his bed before 8am. When he is up and ready for a walk he will often roll around on the floor, trying to bite our feet. Certainly an expression of excitability but he can bite a little hard. – He does love to play, although the frequency is getting less as he ages (he’ll be three years old in September). He can be a bit rough when playing – loves to use his mouth and his feet to grab toys. This is getting better with his impulse control training but he can still be a little over exuberant if he gets too excited. He likes to vocalise when playing with both people and dogs which can sound rather aggressive but isn’t. – He does bark a fair bit. We’ve taught him ‘quiet’ but we live in an area where people often walk past our window and he’ll need to warn us at least once every time. – He loves to learn new things, but does get bored easily. – He is quite protective of his home and unknown people at our door get barked at a lot. – Once he is happy with visitors or people he knows, he will just want to be stroked and fussed. – He does not like the local cats in or near our garden. He will chase these away and we’ve seen him try to climb up the fence to get at them – a secure garden and high fence is a must in his new home! This reaction has become less intense with some training but he will always reactive to them. – Interestingly, cats we met out on walks who stand their ground will invoke a different reaction – Rudy will be a little confused and avoidant, especially if they hiss. (I do wonder whether he could live in a new home with a cat that was used to dogs and/or would stand their ground, especially as this new home wouldn’t be ‘his’ yet). He loves to be up high. When we first got him, the first thing he did was jump on our dining room table (the tallest item in the room at the time). Again, the impulse control training has addressed this in the house but he loves to clamber and climb when out for walks. Thankfully, he is a dream with regards to the kitchen – he has never jumped on to the units and has only once stolen some cooked chicken breast that we had left too close to the edge. We’ve accidentally left bread and leftovers out on the counter overnight and he’s never once touched those. – He has happily stayed with relatives for a few days. – He also loves the car!
